"My limb feels tight, like bursting, my skin looks taut and shinny, sometimes it turns red and feels warm, other times it feels numb and a bit hard, can be painful and difficult to use my limb effectively. These are the usual comments from my Lymphoedema patients during their consultation" said Veronica Yap, the Lymphoedema Therapist.

Lymphoedema is an accumulation of protein rich fluids in the spaces between the cells due to the inability of the lymphatic system to remove it. The fluid in the tissues, which behaves like a stagnant swamp, means most of the cells which are immersed in it cannot function as well as they used to so they do not carry out any of their normal tasks.

As the fluid and protein accumulation worsens, soon you can see a greater difference in the size of your limb. The swelling is a problem confined to the skin and other tissues above the muscles. If the problem remains untreated for a long time, the fluid will gradually be replaced by rather hard, dense tissue called fibrous tissue. This tissue can be likened to the sinewy material you often find in a piece of steak. Once this occurs it’s more difficult to treat.

At Masso Institute, we believe in a multidisciplinary approach. We recognize that a patient does not have isolated problems, or symptoms, usually the associated symptoms are sometimes ignored or neglected because it is irrelevant to that particular medical practitioner. Trained by the prestigious Vodder School as qualified Lymphoedema Therapist, our primary modality is using the gentle yet most effective system of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) and Combine Decongestion Therapy (CDT) however, we are also qualified in other modalities of work and integrate it to offer comprehensive care to our Lymphoedema patients. It's not just care giving, it's how we care to give.
